Is Active Voice Enough? Community Discussions on Passive Voice, MMIWG2S, and Violence against Urban Indigenous Women in San José, California

Men commit violence against Native American women at higher rates than other racial or ethnic groups. When Indigenous is discussed and written about, it often in passive voice. Several scholars note the problem of using voice to talk about women, but there little research on how themselves understand as connected perpetrated them, we found no literature This asks urban language relationship violence. The authors, who are all members Red Earth Women’s Society (REWS), took up this conversation with San José, California, a year-long series meetings that culminated three focus-group discussions (FGD)/talking circles (TC) where expressed their understanding women. From these exploratory talking circles, women’s aligned previous voice, also contributed new insights.
